How much does it cost to make an audiobook? Three routes

Paying a human narrator up front runs to a few thousand dollars on ACX's 2013 rates. On NovelHive, a typical 65,000-word novel comes to about $4.87. KDP's and Google Play's own AI programs are free for now, if they'll take your book.

Price isn't the only difference. Each route also decides where the book can be sold:

The human row is our arithmetic on ACX's own numbers. In its Money Talks post from June 2013, ACX puts one finished hour of audio at about 9,300 words, and industry-standard rates at "roughly $200 PFH for narration and another $200 PFH for the post production work." PFH means per finished hour, and ACX says a total of $300 to $400 PFH makes sense for the work involved.

A 65,000-word novel is 65,000 ÷ 9,300 = about 7 finished hours. 7 × $300 to $400 = $2,100 to $2,800.

On NovelHive, at $0.75 per 10,000 words, that same finished hour of 9,300 words is 0.93 × $0.75 = about 70 cents.

ACX also offers a second deal, royalty share. You pay the narrator nothing up front and split your royalties 50-50 instead, but only if you give ACX exclusive distribution.

That money buys real work. ACX says it takes about four hours to produce one finished hour, so a 7-hour book is roughly 28 hours of someone's time in the booth and at the editing desk.

A human performance is a different product, and ACX, Audible's platform for authors, requires one unless Audible authorizes otherwise. NovelHive is for hearing your book as a full cast, and for the stores that accept AI narration with a label.

AI audiobook cost, worked out: how NovelHive prices a book

We price by length. One billing unit is 60,000 characters, which is about 10,000 words at 6 characters a word. Narrating your manuscript costs $0.75 per unit.

Why characters and not words? Some languages don't put spaces between words, and a word count would price those books unfairly. As our pricing page puts it, "Non-Latin scripts are counted as characters." Formatting isn't billed either: we drop asterisks and squeeze runs of spaces down to one before we count.

There's no minimum for your own manuscript. Books we write from an idea start at 20,000 words: $1.50, or $2.50 narrated.

Here's the example from our pricing page, line by line:

Credits cost $0.10 each, and purchased credits don't expire.

Each chapter opens with its number and title read aloud. You'll hear it, so it's counted too.

You can price your own book before you sign up. Type in a word count or drag the slider, and the page does this sum for you.

The quote is the most you'll pay

For your manuscript, the number you confirm is a ceiling. The bill comes in at that number or under it, never over.

When you're ready, the book page asks "Record this audiobook?" The button reads "Record for" followed by your price in credits, and the receipt behind How we count ends with "Never more than this."

You'll need enough credits in your balance to start. But nothing is held up front. Credits come off once, after the audio exists, for what was delivered.

It's measured scene by scene, and each scene is billed on the words actually spoken. You pay only for what was voiced.

If our price changes between the quote and your click, you'll see "Nothing was charged; please review the new price." Then you confirm again, or you don't.

Books we write from an idea work a little differently, because we can't count words that don't exist yet. The unlock card says "Up to" and adds "Usually less. The rest stays in your balance." It's the same promise: you approve a ceiling, and you pay for what's delivered.

For your own manuscript, listen before you upload. All 86 voices play on our home page without an account, and the same page has a single-voice versus full-cast sample of one scene.

Uploading is free, and so are reading your file and casting the voices. The review screen shows your narration price, and the receipt under How we count ends with "Nothing is charged until you record it." While it records

We don't promise a fixed time. It depends on how long the book is and how busy we are.

After a couple of minutes, the book page starts showing a range of minutes remaining, and it updates as chapters finish. You don't have to watch it, though. Close the tab. When every chapter is voiced, we'll email you that your audiobook is ready, with a Listen Now button, the runtime and who narrated it.

That email only goes to a verified address, and only for a fully voiced book.

What you get: M4B or MP3

A finished book has an Export Novel menu on its page. The audio choices are Audiobook (M4B) and Audio Chapters (ZIP). The same menu also exports EPUB, PDF and TXT.

M4B is a single audio file made for audiobook players, with chapters built in. Ours carries a chapter marker for every chapter, named like "Chapter 1: Title", and your book's cover embedded as artwork when the book has one.

MP3 comes as a ZIP with one file per chapter, numbered and titled in order. It's handy for players that don't handle M4B, or for sending a single chapter to a beta listener.

Audio exports run in the background with a progress bar, and they're on the web only. The iPhone app streams the audiobook but doesn't export files.

These files are made for listening, not built to any store's upload spec, so check a store's technical requirements before you submit.

In our web reader, the Audio button is part of the page from the moment it loads. Press it and the player docks at the bottom of the window, so you can read along while you listen.

The controls do what you'd expect:

• Skip back or forward by a chapter, or by 10 seconds
• Speed runs from 0.5x to 2x
• Close hides and pauses the player, and the Audio button brings it back

On a wide screen, the book's details sit in a rail on the left (with the cast, on a full-cast book) and the contents sit on the right, with each chapter's running time. Hide either rail and the reader remembers.

Where you can sell an AI-narrated audiobook in 2026

Not Audible. Yes to Kobo, and yes to Spotify for Spotify's own listeners. Check the rest before you count on them. Here's each store's own rule as we found it on September 12, 2026.

Audible's rule is blunt. The ACX audio submission requirements say: "Unauthorized use of text-to-speech, AI, or automated recordings in ACX titles is prohibited."

Kobo Writing Life says it gladly accepts AI narration, and asks you to list the narrator as "Synthesised voice" (male, female or unspecified). Spotify for Authors accepts AI narration "for distribution on Spotify only."

Voices by INaudio only takes AI-narrated packages made by three providers it names, so NovelHive files don't qualify there.

For direct uploads, Google Play's content policy only bans "low-quality, unclear machine-read audio," and we found no Apple rule either way. Check before you rely on either.

Wherever you publish, label the narration as AI. And we don't distribute for you: you download the files and upload them yourself.

Plenty of good uses never touch a store: beta readers who'd rather listen, your mailing list, or hearing your draft read back before an editor sees it.
